WHO AM I?

My name is Michael McDermott. I was born on June 6, 1984 in Providence, RI. Growing up, I was always the creative one. Whether it was in art class or at home writing stories, I enjoyed spending my free time using my imagination. Creating has always been one of my most enjoyable hobbies and throughout my childhood and adolescent years, it has led me to take up things like music composition, song writing, choreography and even some video game design.

Ever since I was a child I always dreamed of having a career where I would get to put my extensive imagination to work every day. I consider it a blessing that I made up my mind to pursue a career in Design. Traveling this path I have discovered something I am not only quite skillful in, but found something that genuinely makes me happy.

THE 2015 JOHN MEDEIROS JEWELRY COLLECTIONS CATALOG

This 129 page catalog is the culmination of countless hours of photgraphy, image editing, design and production. Each beautiful piece of jewelry is purposely placed to not only flatter the product, but to also capture the viewers attention and retain engagement from beginning to end. To be the sole creator of a catalog that has been distributed to hundreds of shops nationally and viewed by thousands was truly a great honor.

JOHN MEDEIROS JEWELRY COLLECTIONS BILLBOARD DESIGN FOR GREENSBORO JEWELERS IN GEORGIA, USA

One of the most exciting parts of being the sole designer for a small business is the incredible variations of projects you are exposed to. Developing massive billboards for display on major highways in Greensboro, Georgia was challenging yet thrilling! To know that your photography and designs are not only viewed by thousands daily, but are driving sales for small businesses a thousand miles away is nothing short of richly rewarding.

JOHN MEDEIROS JEWELRY COLLECTIONS EXCLUSIVE PARTNER LUNCHEON INVITATION POSTCARD

To gather your strongest partners together for an exclusive business luncheon, your first priority must be to catch their eye and gain their full attention. I designed this postcard solely with this idea in mind. Showcasing the latest premier jewelry collection and complimenting each indigo stone with blue accents throughout the carefully chosen typography helped to make this event a true business success.

JOHN MEDEIROS JEWELRY COLLECTIONS PROMOTIONAL BOUNCE BACK CARD

After bringing John Medeiros Jewelry Collections into the world of E-Commerce for the first time and seeing their first successes, a way to gather repeat customers was sought out. This bounce back card was the answer. Incorporating the brands classic reptile skin and signature crest, I designed this promotional card to be elegant, true to the line and clear to the consumer.

JOHN MEDEIROS JEWELRY COLLECTIONS OVERSIZED 5X7 POSTCARD

To promote the latest addition to the brands popular 'Celebration Collection' line, I photographed and designed this postcard to showcase a set of beautiful crosses accented with an array of elegant gemstones. Grouping and laying the four pendants over a blanket of grays, while also hinting at the shape of a cross, creates a strong contrast and highlights the intricacies of the jewelry, while also promoting the collections spiritual theme.

PERSONAL FITNESS TRAINER BUSINESS CARD

This was a fun freelance project! For this design, the goal was to focus on strength, while maintaining an approachable feel, regardless of gender. Developing her brand with a sporty logo and athletic typography, built on an eye catching color scheme helps to highlight the trainers certifications and contact information. Real contact information has been omitted to protect the privacy of the client.

CROSSFIT OF EAST PROVIDENCE PROMOTIONAL POSTCARD

Creating a postcard design for a gym that already had a logo and color scheme in place would sound like a pretty straight forward project. However, to build upon that branding and take it to the next level was a fun and challenging experience. I approached my design with this idea in mind. For the background, I chose a gritty and distressed look which showcases the logo spray painted on a concrete wall. To add depth and build on the foundation I had created, I layered this look with a chain link fence. Overlaying the message in a themed font creates a strong character and one the client was especially satisfied with.

JOHN MEDEIROS JEWELRY COLLECTIONS TRADE SHOW ATRIUM BANNER

I am always quite excited to work on large scale print graphics. Seeing your work displayed in such a big and impactful way is quite appealing! When tasked with creating a large atrium banner for an Appleman Shauben Trade show I chose a jewelry collection that was a particularly good seller. Theming the 'Seaside Collection' banner with a Caribbean blue color scheme and incorporating a faded compass and sailboat mast rounds out an appealing and eye catching design.

One of the most important holidays of the year in the jewelry industry is (not surprisingly) valentine's day. I was excited to have the opportunity to photograph and design a promotional postcard to garner attention to the 'Heart Collection' jewelry line. Roses garnished with baby's breath and chocolates over a marble canvas accent the sparkling heart jewelry and round out the theme of this successful promotional postcard.

Showcasing John Medeiros Jewelry Collections' latest line on a softly textured background highlights the sparkle of this timeless piece. The separation of light to dark moves your eye gently over the name of the collection to a descriptive paragraph detailing the features of the jewelry.

JOHN MEDEIROS JEWELRY COLLECTIONS POSTCARD FOR TRADE SHOW

The puprose of this postcard was to attract potential partners and urge them to visit the companies trade show booth. To achieve this goal, I photographed and featured a family shot of a new jewelry collection under spotlight and between shadows. This canvas creates an eye catching scene that flatters the product and successfully attracts the audience.

The second of two large atrium banners for an Appleman Shauben Trade show. Featuring jewelry from their 'Seaside Collection' on a Caribbean blue and white color scheme, and incorporating a faded compass and sailboat rounds out an appealing and eye catching design.

My work in Production Design includes Ad resizing, layout adjustment, updates to imagery, calls to action, and headline and copy changes. These adjustments were made while maintaining all brand standards and integrity. This is just one of many print advertisements I was a part of.

BENNYS PIZZA PUB & PATIO RESTAURANT MENU RE-DESIGN

The goal of this project was to bring a black and white text only restaurant menu to the next level. I aimed to design an engaging menu that creates a feeling of elegance to the restaurant's consumer. Incorporating a soft, almost rustic color scheme with a floral touch on the inner pages helps to bring an attractive and eye pleasing design from idea to fruition.

BOOK COVER RE-DESIGN

For this project my goal was to breathe new life into an outdated novel cover. Capturing the mood of the story in imagery was not only challenging , but also very rewarding fun. A gloomy fog covered forest bathed in moonlight helped to set the tone of the book cover. Overlaying Gothic typography adds the finishing touch to a successful novel cover re-design.

The image of your company is everything. Having a recognizable brand can be the difference between success and failure. In this project I showcase an elegant brand shown consistently across printed stationary such as letterheads, business cards and envelopes.

TRI FOLD BROCHURE

In this project, I showcase a tri-fold brochure illustrating the health benefits of switching from smoking traditional cigarettes to an electronic cigarette. A balanced mix of imagery and text over a soft background of rising vapor helps to accentuate the message portrayed.

This fine art and photography company approached me to develop their logo with the sole requirement that the logo incorporate the mythical flying Phoenix. Building upon this idea, I illustrated the creature and built the logo off of this foundation. The script font I chose plays extremely well with the curves of the Phoenix and even more unity is achieved by reflecting the illustration. The color scheme adds desired femininity and a simple lowercase font creates the perfect amount of balance and contrast to the logo.

M.A.C. TREE & LANDSCAPE

After seeing the logo I developed for Seavision Underwater Solutions, the owner of M.A.C Tree & Landscape reached out to me for the development of a logo for his new company. I was excited to have the opportunity! Working off of only a provided color scheme, I envisioned a memorable logo with a clear and descriptive message. The tree across the horizon provided the perfect canvas on which to build the foundation. The Trajan Pro font is a classic and powerful typeface and fits the scene incredibly well. Building the initials upward from the horizon and into the tree adds a fun and unifying touch, while also developing hierarchy for the remainder of the companies title and location.

SEAVISION UNDERWATER SOLUTIONS

The company of a co-workers husband, Seavision Underwater Solutions is a long standing company that was in need of a refreshed logo design. With the trident concept already in place, I built upon this foundation by weaving the letter "S" around the trident and added a resemblance to a fish hook. I enhanced the scene by adding a metallic finish and depth to the lettering and trident, and fittingly incorporated a hint of ocean blue coloring. The reflection plays well with the companies field of work.

VERDANT REMEDIES

This project focused on the development of a logo for a tea company. Blending together a palette of earthy tones and choosing a typeface that played at the rising steam from the tea cup rounds out a successful and fitting design.

RI NIGHTLIFE

This project focused on the creation of a logo for a company focused on providing insight to nightlife in Rhode Island. Choosing a fun color scheme and typeface that speaks to the subject matter was the first step. Replacing the "I" in nightlife with a martini glass and olive adds fun to the logo and helps to convey a clear message of the companies purpose to the viewer. Adding a watery reflection to the logo adds depth and character to a successful logo design.

E-CIG411

The purpose of this project was to create a logo for a company whose sole purpose was to provide information on electronic cigarettes. Understanding that these devices create water vapor, I chose a fitting color scheme and incorporated a flame to further convey the message to the viewer.

JOHNMEDEIROS.com is the online storefront for nationally recognized jeweler John Medeiros Jewelry Collections. I developed this massive E-commerce web site on the Shopify platform. Using Shopify's custom coding language 'Liquid' (which was built on the Ruby on Rails language), I incorporated a beautiful custom built UI and theme which showcases this remarkable Jewelry Collection as the elegant, high end fashion jewelery that it is.

In addition to photographing and editing all products, hero images and advertisements included in the shop, I also wrote all keywords, product descriptions and promotions. The end result is a seamless, responsive User Experience that not only greatly increased sales and brand awareness, but also received great praise from their customer base for excellent ease of use and accessibility.

The finished product is responsive across all devices including desktop, laptop, tablet and phone.

MACTreeLLC.com

MACTREELLC.COM is the online home for M.A.C. Tree LLC, a tree removal/landscaping company based in Rhode Island. After creating their logo, I was asked to bring their business online. With responsive, sleek and professional in mind, I designed the site using their red and black color scheme and beautiful photography of their work.

The web site layout allows for all pertinent information to be easily accessible, yet presented as an eye pleasing experience. The finished product is responsive across all devices including desktop, laptop, tablet and phone.

E-Cig411.net

The E-Cig411.net was a project designed and coded using Adobe Dreamweaver. It is a small brochure site that provides knowledge on electronic cigarettes. E-Cig411.net was my first site design, my first experience with SEO web writing and my first officially launched web site.

RINightlife.com

The RINightlife.com project is a web site housing a wealth of information dedicated to nightlife in Providence, Rhode Island. The site was fully designed and hand coded in CSS and includes custom photography and elements of Flash and Javascript.

I begin with the company logo and navigation which seamlessly links to each corresponding section of the E-commmerce web site, followed by the Hero Image which clearly defines our subject. The first of dozens of Email campaigns I developed for John Medeiros Jewelry Collections. This particular Email campaign was launched to promote a spring promotion which included a free bracelet for restocking orders.

Integrating a beautiful photo of the promotional item on a sleek-textured purple background catches the viewers attention. A clear hierarchy of information and carefully chosen font styles and colors helps the reader easily navigate the presented information.

Animatics are completely hand drawn storyboards of a promo spot or a sizzle. They are essential to the production process as it allows you to foresee potential problems and correct them before moving into production.

During my internship with Hasbro's Cake Mix Studios I turned the Baby Alive Storyboard pictured below the video (click to enlarge) into a full motion graphics piece demonstrating what the final production may look like.

A Sizzle is a production piece made solely for an in house audience (such as a company's marketing department) to generate “heat” or buzz about the product. Hence the name "Sizzle."

Supers or "call-outs" are super-imposed words or graphics that sit in front of a scene in a television spot or sizzle.

Islands are what make up the final scene of a production spot.
They include the branding, title, and logo/trademarks of the products company.

During my internship with Hasbro's Cake Mix Studios I created this video incorporating all three of the above.

HOW TO PERFORM CPR

"How To Perform CPR" is a fully scripted, shot, edited and rendered production I created while studying video production at New England Institute of Technology.

The production techniques I've acquired in addition to music composition and voice over acting complete this mixed and edited product.

3D ANIMATION

This project is the culmination of my work in 3D modeling and animation. The electronic cigarette was created using NewTek Lightwave and Adobe Illustrator. The video was then edited in Adobe After Effects.

Combining precise modeling with sleek textures, I rounded the final composition out with astounding camera angles and a custom music track and voice over.

3D DOMINO MODELING

These 3D Dominoes were created using NewTek Lightwave and Adobe Photoshop. After modeling and texturing the pieces, I then added lighting and shadows to complete the scene.

CHROME SHAPES - 3D MODELING

Created Using only NewTek Lightwave, I modeled this 3D rendering of three primitive shapes on a checkered canvas, and then textured them with a sleek, custom chrome finish.

MUSIC PRODUCTION

Music composition and production have always been close to my heart. Over the years I have gained extensive knowledge of essential sound tools such as Adobe Audition, Compressor and a vast amount of DAW synthesizers such as FL Studio. While in school, I honed my audio editing skills and combined my love for music with the wisdom I have gained. On this page you will find numerous samples of my work.
